Amazon dimensional weight: when you pay for the box

Light products in roomy boxes are billed as if they were heavier. Here is exactly when that happens in 2026 and what it costs.

Updated October 18, 2026

The formula

Dimensional weight = length × width × height ÷ 139, with inches in and pounds out. Amazon then bills on the greater of the unit weight and the dimensional weight, for these tiers:

  • Small standard: never. Billed on unit weight only.
  • Large standard: yes.
  • Small bulky, large bulky, extra-large up to 150 lb: yes, and the width and height are treated as at least 2 inches.
  • Extra-large over 150 lb: unit weight only.

A worked example, and a common error

Take a 12 oz product in a 9 × 6 × 2 inch box selling for $24.99. The box volume is 108 cubic inches; 108 ÷ 139 = 0.78 lb, which is 12.4 oz. That is more than the unit weight, so Amazon bills on 12.4 oz and the unit lands in the 12–16 oz row: $4.60 before the surcharge, $4.76 after it.

Ship the same 12 oz product in an 8 × 6 × 1.5 inch box (0.52 lb dimensional) and it bills on 12 oz: $4.20, or $4.35 with the surcharge. The smaller box is worth $0.41 on every unit sold, before you count lower storage.

We found a widely shared 2026 fee table whose worked example uses exactly this 9 × 6 × 2 box and quotes $4.20. It skips the dimensional weight check. If a calculator gives you a fee without asking for dimensions, it can't catch this.

Why the 2-inch rule exists

A 40-inch fishing rod tube that is 1.5 inches across would have almost no dimensional weight. For bulky and extra-large items Amazon rounds width and height up to 2 inches in the formula, so that tube is billed at no less than 40 × 2 × 2 ÷ 139 = 1.15 lb.

How to check your own product

  1. Measure the packaged unit as Amazon will receive it, rounding up to the next tenth of an inch.
  2. Run it through the size tier calculator to see the billed weight.
  3. If the billed weight is dimensional, try a slightly smaller box in the FBA calculator; its fee-cliff check estimates the saving automatically.
  4. After your first inbound, compare with the dimensions Amazon measured (Seller Central shows them per ASIN) and request a re-measure if they're off.
